One of China’s most promising designers, Mario Tsai, began his research-driven practice in 2014. Renowned for an innovative approach, he delves into material and technology nuances to enhance production efficiency. For him, sustainability means designing clear structures that ensure durability, require minimal maintenance, and feature easily replaceable and reconfigurable components. Starting as a direct-to-consumer business in Hangzhou, the label has evolved into a dynamic brand specialising in modular lighting systems with distributors across Asia and Europe. In 2024, alongside collaborating with international design brands, Tsai ventured into collectible design, which provided him with greater creative freedom. Insights from his journey will cover the evolution of his local brand to a global presence, his cross-cultural experiences, and observations on both the Chinese and international lighting markets.
